How to release an upset and restore inner peace fast

Years ago, something happened and I got upset. I was so upset, I couldn’t think about anything else. My circumstances had total power over me. I lost my joy and my effectiveness. Sound familiar? This is what happens when we get upset.

I then shifted my focus from what was going on outside of me to what was going on inside of me. The first thing I noticed was that I was full of emotion. It’s the emotion that was stealing my joy and sabotaging my life. I had to get this negative emotion out of me.

The next thing I did was to notice all the hurt that was under my upset. Incidentally, there is always hurt under our upsets. We wouldn’t get upset if we didn’t feel hurt. The moment you are willing to feel this hurt, the upset loses power.

To get rid of the negative emotion, I dove into the hurt and felt it willingly like a child. I felt it deliberately and purposefully. I even exaggerated it. I felt it because I wanted to, instead of because life was forcing me to. In less than a minute, the hurt was gone and my joy was back. By feeling the hurt willingly, because I chose to, I was able to release it.

When we are hurt, we are hurt. We don’t have a choice about whether we are going to feel it. We will. Our only choice is how. When we feel our hurt willing like a child, it goes. When we feel it unwillingly, as a victim of our circumstances, it stays.

The next time you get upset, go to the hurt that is under your upset and dive into it. Feel it willingly like a child. Feel it deliberately and purposefully. Feel the hurt of your circumstances and the deeper childhood hurt of feeling worthless, not good enough, not worth loving, or whatever your core hurt is. Let the hurt come and let it go.

The ability to release upsets and restore inner peace is one of the most important skills you can ever learn. It is one of the keys to being effective and having a great life.
